From the Founder’s Desk reflects BALAI’s pursuit of better spaces through real experience, disciplined decisions, and the evolving standards behind modern cabin building in the Philippine landscape.

MY STORY

Welcome to The BALAI Gazette, a personal journal shaped by travel, site work, and the quiet pull of places that make you imagine a life closer to nature. It is a space for stories from job sites, mountain roads, road trips, and the many landscapes that first opened my eyes to alternative homes and off-the-beaten-path living.

Here, I share the journey behind the cabins, the lessons learned the hard way, and the moments that made building small in big places feel deeply meaningful. For anyone drawn to adventure, lighter living, different lifestyles, or the idea of creating something with purpose, this is where the story continues.

MY JOURNEY TO BUILDING THE PERFECT TINY HOME SOMEHOW MADE MY LIFE BIGGER

Over the past several years, I have travelled across the country through our family’s construction enterprise, working on projects that shaped how I understood space, building, and the way people live. In 2019, I became part of a large resort development involving container villas, resort facilities, and swimming pool projects. That experience introduced me to the real potential of modular homes and prefab cabins, not as trends, but as a smarter way to create meaningful spaces in the Philippine landscape.

From that point, a new passion began to take shape. I felt called to build something of my own from the ground up, guided by the lessons I had learned on-site and the needs I saw in the field. We began developing our own systems and technology for modular cabins suited to our local climate, lifestyle, and way of living. What started as a search for the perfect tiny home eventually became something bigger: a clearer purpose, a stronger discipline, and the beginning of BALAI.

A person wearing a helmet, headlamp, red gloves, and dark clothing is climbing a rocky surface at night with safety ropes and gear.

As a curious adventurer, mountaineer, and frequent traveler, I have always been drawn to the outdoors and the lessons found in different environments. That way of seeing the world continues to shape how I design cabins for the Filipino setting, where practicality, comfort, and a deeper connection to nature must work together.

I enjoy studying scale, ergonomics, and the small details that influence how people experience a space. Whether working on the tiniest micro cabin or a larger premium retreat, my goal is to create spaces that feel thoughtful, livable, and meaningful.

I invite you to join me in discovering the best cabin experiences we can create together. Through this journey, we’ll explore outdoor living, small-space design, and the simple joys of gathering with family and friends in spaces built with intention. I also founded Building Alternatives and Innovations Corp. (BALAI PH), dedicated to developing alternative housing solutions and modern tropical spaces for Filipinos. Through The BALAI Gazette, I hope to share insights on cabin living, sustainable design, and creating homes that support a purposeful lifestyle.

Along the way, the journey may lead through trails, campsites, quiet towns, and distant places, each one offering its own lesson in how people live, build, and belong to their surroundings. With more than 30 years of industry experience across the country behind our work, my hope is to share these lessons with humility while continuing to grow with a community that values innovation, craftsmanship, and meaningful living.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story! Future chapters may include more cabins, more field notes, and perhaps a few questionable life decisions along the way.
